What are Wax Melts?

A wax melt is wax which has been combined with a fragrance oil. It’s similar to what you would find in a scented candle, but it has no wick.

Wax melts are used by warming up the wax using either a tea light burner or an electric burner. For best results with Made to Melt by Emma wax melts, as they are made with soy wax, I recommend using a tea light burner.

A candle disperses its scent as the wick and wax burns and whilst they can last a long time, the scent throw can vary dramatically.

In comparison, with wax melts, the burner will heat the entire portion of the wax melt - throwing the scent but without burning the wax. Eventually the wax will lose its scent and it’s time to change your wax melt for a new one.

Made to Melt by Emma’s soy wax melts contain between 8% & 12% fragrance load, giving a consistent & long-lasting scent throw.

Why choose wax melts instead of candles?

Wax melts are becoming increasingly popular - and for good reason, too! Wax melts work out to be much more cost-effective than buying candles. Just 2 cubes of my Std Sized Snap Bars cost 60p and typically last for approximately 12 hours! That’s approximately 60 hours per bar, for just £3!

Some people love super strong scents, and others prefer a more subtle fragrance. With wax melts, you can control the intensity of the fragrance very easily. For a stronger & intense scent throw - add more to the well of your burner, but be careful never to over fill. Equally, for a more subtle scent throw, you can reduce the amount of the product you add to the well of your burner.

I generally recommend using 2 of my wax melt cubes per warmer, however, for a more subtle scent or for a smaller room, just 1 cube can be used, too.

A fragrance can lift your mood, help you relax, transport you in a memory, welcome visitors, match the weather or the season, signal the end of the cleaning – the list goes on. With wax melts, as opposed to candles, you only burn a cube or 2 at a time, this means you don’t have to wait until you’ve used the whole snap bar to change scents, you’re free to swap fragrances as often as you like!

How to use Wax Melts

If using a classic tea light heated burner (for example, one made from ceramic, glass or metal), place a cube or 2 of your wax melt into the dished area and then heat from below with a lit unscented tea light. The heat from the tea light will melt the wax, releasing the fragrance, and fill the room with a beautiful aroma.

If using an electric burner, also place a cube or two of your favourite wax melt into the dished area of the burner and simply switch the burner on to heat and melt the wax. Electric burners can be great as they are a flame-free option. Some wax melt users with young kids, for example, favour these burners as they’re viewed as a safer alternative.

Electric burners tend to use a low watt bulb, and these sometimes do not get warm enough to melt soy wax thoroughly which will reduce the scent throw. At Made to Melt by Emma I use soy wax and for this reason, would recommend using a tea light burner to get the best results from my wax melts.

Unlike a candle, the wax in a wax melt doesn’t disappear as you use it. Instead, eventually, the wax will lose its scent. When this happens, you will want to remove the wax from the burner to change it over to a fresh new wax melt.

How to Change Wax Melts

There are a few ways to remove an old wax melt from your burner.

One popular way is to heat the cooled wax for around a minute and then it should simply slide straight out.

Others like to completely melt the wax and then pop in a couple of cotton pads to soak the wax straight up for removal.

A third option is to place the dish of the burner in the freezer for around half an hour – this will cause the wax to shrink slightly and it should separate from the dish easily.

Take care not to use a sharp tool, such as a knife, to try to remove the wax as this could easily cause damage to the burner.
